Mohammad Omer Khalil was born in 1936 in Khartoum, Sudan, and trained at the School of Fine and Applied Arts in Khartoum before pursuing advanced studies in fresco painting and printmaking at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy. Since moving to New York City in 1967, he has worked as a painter, collage artist, and master printmaker while contributing to the artistic community as an educator and mentor.
Khalil's practice synthesizes traditional Arab design elements and patterns with modernist influences drawn from pop art and European printmaking traditions. His work engages with his extensive travels throughout the Middle East and sustained dialogue with art history, creating layered compositions that negotiate between cultural sources. His artistic contributions have influenced two generations of artists in the Arab world, and his works are held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
